press shift or ctrl mouse and switch to erase mode

It is not obvious how to switch to a mode where the mouse erases a line. Allowing an easy method would be great. In fact, I couldn't even find an erase mode, which is a very serious omission.
Also, importing from TTF and other files besides image files would be an asset too.
